He was the most popular musician in
his time. Then he made a break and it
seemed that a great career is over.
But in 1992 he made a comeback, which
proved everyone that he still has
something to show. So guys, here
comes an interview with
Romeo Knight
of Masque
Interview by Rackler/ABS!
--------------------------------------
SH: Okay! First of all the usual
stuff. Hey, Romeo, tell us your real
name, how old are you, what are your
hobbies, etc.,etc. ?!?
RK: Well, my real name is EIKE
STEFFEN, and I am 22 years old now.
My hobbies are ofcourse music! I'm
not making music only on the Amiga, I
am also playing guitar, bass, and with
my Synthesizer, and that became more
and more important for me during the
last time instead making music on the
Amiga.
SH: For how long are you making
music, or how long are you in the
scene?
RK: Huh, in the scene ... Well, I
also made music on the C64, but that
was some time ago, and I hadn't any
contact to the scene. And on the
Amiga, well, I think about 7 years.
Yes, 7 years, since 1987! But I'm not
much interested in the so called
"Scene"...
SH: Have you been in any other groups
before TRSI or Masque ???
RK: Yes, but only for a very short
time, in a Danish group called Jewels,
that was at the beginning. And I
wasn't very long in that group, and I
have also never seen any member. Then
I joined RED SECTOR...
SH: Hm, it was very quite about Romeo
Knight during the last years. Can you
tell me why ???
RK: Well,I was in the army, so that I
couldn't compose very much. But I
made some tunes nevertheless, but they
simply did not get released.
@IPkenguruC
SH: Hm, your musicstyle changed a lot
in opposition to your old tunes. When
I remember tunes like "Rise up" or
"Cream of the Earth", and I compare
them to tunes like "Cosmic Dog II" or
"Gonna be Infectious"...
RK: Well, I always tried not to
orientate, like many others do, on
other musicians style or to convert
the style from the C64 to the Amiga.
I tried to make some Pop- or Rock-
music on the Amiga, and so I used more
and more guitars in my last songs,
becoz that's the music I personally
like. I would, for example, never
compose a techno-tune, coz I really
don't like it!
SH: To what "real music" are you
listening to?
RK: Well, I'm listening to diverse
metal-groups, but I don't have a real
musicdirection. I like Sucidial
Tendencies for example, or Depeche
Mode, but in the past I heard much Hip
Hop-music. But I think that you
probably could hear the influence of
the music, in some of my rhytms or
so...
SH: I have heard that you also made a
tape???
RK: Oh, Hm, I made about 8 or 9 songs
with my synthesizer, just for fun, and
not for any commercial reasons, more
for my personal further development.
I only copied some of these songs to
some of my friends, which wanted to
have some of these songs, and that's
all.
SH: Well, many guys are saying that
YOU are the best musician on Amiga.
What's your opinion about that ?
RK: Oh, well, I really wouldn't like
to contradict here, but I think that's
exaggerated, becoz there are for sure
other musicians which are really of
the same value. And I wouldn't depend
it only on the music, coz I made for
sure also some bad songs.
SH: Hm, what's your position to the
so called Scene?
RK: Hm, most of the time I really
don't care about the scene, it's more
important for me that I'm working
together with some people, which are
really doing their job, and not
telling me to compose a song, and at
the end nothing happens, and it's also
important to have some fun with it!
SH: Yes, I really know what you mean!
Well, what's your opinion about other
Amiga-musicians? I'll tell you some
names now, and please tell me your
opinion about them, okay ?
RK: That's quite difficult, coz, as I
said before, I'm not much interested
in the scene, and I don't know much
demos or musicdisks, so I can't judge
someone. I probably heard some tunes
of these guys, but I really can't
remember which song was from which
musician, and for sure I don't know
much of their compositions ...
SH: Oh, too bad, so let's come to the
next question. You have been at the
Scoopex-Cebit party in Hannover'93.
What was your opinion about this
Party?
RK: Also a difficult question for
me, coz that was the first real
Copy-Party which I visited, so can't
compare it with other Copy parties!
But I was a bit angry that I won only
the second prize at the Music-
competition!
SH: Why did Masque leave TRSI???
RK: That's another thing where I
can't say you much about, coz I hadn't
much to do with that. That was a
disagreement between Wayne M. and
some other guys, but just a typical
scene-crap, and I really don't care
about that, coz for me it's only
important that I know the people where
I'm working with, and I also don't
care, under which groupname my tunes
get released.
SH: What are the future-projects from
Masque?
RK: Wayne M. wanted to code a new
trackmo for the next WOC, but that's
not 100 percent sure actually.
SH: If you would leave Masque, which
group would you like to join?
RK: I really don't know, and I really
don't care. It's important for me
that I know the people which are in
this Group, and I think I would join a
group where most members would live
near to me. Anyway, I'm very unactive
on Amiga now...
SH: Okay, we finally reached the end.
That's it. Is there anything you
would like to say at the end ???
RK: Hehehe, maybe ... Everyone
should use more drugs!
SH: Okay, nice, hehe ! Thank you,
EIKE, for that nice interview with
you, and have a nice Scene-time ...
